Boarding Information
Go to your nearest bus stop, making sure you arrive at least five minutes before your bus is scheduled to depart. Many stops on TRANSPO routes are marked by our bus stop signs. For your convenience, however, TRANSPO buses will stop at all four-way intersections along the route. If you have a question about a specific location, call the TRANSPO Information Line at 233-2131.
Have the exact fare ready to drop into the fare box as you board the bus, or have your 31-Day Pass ready to show (click here for more info). If you need to take more than one bus to your destination, ask the bus driver for a Transfer Slip when you board. Transfers are free, and allow you to change buses without having to pay another fare. A transfer allows you to board a different bus that's going in the same direction and only at acceptable locations, letting you continue the trip to your original destination. Transfers are good for (90) minutes from time of issue.
BOARDING THE BUS
Each bus displays the name and number of the route it is traveling above the windshield and next to the front door. Observe the destination signs carefully to make sure you are boarding the right bus, since several different buses may use the same bus stop. When you are sure, simply raise your hand to signal the driver that you want to board. After the bus has stopped and the door is opened, use the handrail for assistance as you board the bus. If you are still unsure if you're boarding the right bus, ask the driver.
When you are about a block away from your destination, let the driver know you want the bus to stop. Do this by pulling the cord above or between the bus windows.
Explanation of what acceptable transfer locations are:
Whenever you need to take more than one bus to reach your destination, you should ask for a transfer slip. Transfer slips are free and are designed for transferring from one bus to another to complete a one-way trip. They are good for ninety (90) minutes and allow passengers to change buses without having to pay a second fare. (Please note: if you are using a 31-day pass, you do not need a transfer slip, as 31-day passes are good for unlimited rides.) Transfer slips may be used at the following locations:
- South Street Station
- Mishawaka Transfer Center
- University Park Mall (transferring between the #7 and #15A or #15B only)
- Town & Country Shopping Center (transferring between the #13 and #15B only)
- Within the downtown South Bend area defined by LaSalle Avenue to the north, South Street to the south, the St. Joseph River to the east, and William Street to the west.
- Within the downtown Mishawaka area defined by the St. Joseph River to the north, 4th Street to the south, Pine Street to the east, and Spring Street to the west.
- Anywhere our bus routes cross paths, provided the bus is not on the same course as the original bus the transfer slip was generated from. (For example, you could not transfer from an outbound bus to another outbound bus).
